Happy Monday guys! Did you have a good weekend? I had an absolutely magical weekend. My incredible and generous sister in law came to stay with my kids so that Nathan and I could have a night away to celebrate his birthday. This is going to sound so cheesy, but it felt like hanging out with a boyfriend I had only been dating for a few weeks but was super into. Magical marital moments are so hard to come by at this stage in life, so I’m still basking in the amazingness of it.

The madness of our morning weekday rush this morning didn’t even deflate me. ????????

I’ll stop before I either make you gag or irritated.

Should we talk about something else magical? Like this Jalapeño Popper Beer Bread recipe?

WHAT TYPE OF BEER SHOULD I USE TO MAKE BEER BREAD?

The simple answer to this question is any type of beer that you really like. The taste of the beer will become more concentrated in the bread, so make sure it is one that you like to drink. If you don’t like drinking beer, you will still love this recipe! If that is the case, just grab a light pilsner beer like Bud Light or Miller Light. Those are great options for this bread. A darker beer like an IPA is going to give this bread a really distinct flavor, so make sure you love those if that is what you plan on using!

    Hi Lisa!
I’m making a variety of breads for co-worker’s Christmas gifts this year and I’m going to try yours this weekend to be included in my selection of breads. What kind of beer did you use? My (adult) kids all have their favorites, but I’m looking for some additional suggestions on what to try . . .
    Thanks bunches!

Hi Stephanie! The only types of beer that I’ve used in beer bread is pilsners, but that’s what I like to drink. I have read that making beer bread is a lot like cooking with wine, whatever taste you go with for the alcohol is only going to intensify once you cook it, so be sure to choose something that you like! I like the pilsner because it has a nice mild flavor that doesn’t make the bread too bitter. I hope that helps!

I know this might be a dumb question, but is self rising flour the same as all purpose flour?

Not a dumb question at all Suzanne! They are definitely not the same. The self-rising flour is what makes this recipe so easy. You don’t need any yeast at all or rising times. Love it! Definitely worth buying a bag :)

Hi question for you – Can you use a carbonated beverage instead of beer? I know the ‘beer cooks out’ but we aren’t a fan of beer, and have often sub’d sprite or some other 7up type of soda for the beer.

Do you think it’ll work in this, or should I just try it and report back? LOL We have a friend who LOVES jalapeno and this would make a nice travel gift for him since he travels all the time. . .

    Thanks in advance!

Kisha, I’m going to have to say try it and report back, lol! I definitely think it will change the flavor, but I don’t know about the constancy or what it will do the baking time. Actually, I might try it and report back :)

Can the beer bread be converted to gluten free?

I think so! You could try making your own self-rising flour (there are lots of great recipes for it, found by searching google), and then you could use a gluten free flour when making the self-rising flour.

FAQs

What is the best beer to use for beer bread? ›

Use a plain, ultra light beer like Miller Light. (If you live in Wisconsin and want an upgrade, try New Glarus Spotted Cow.) Go Seasonal. Try making beer bread with pumpkin ale, a nutty brown winter ale, or even a hard cider.

Should beer be cold for beer bread? ›

Well, don't worry, because when making our beer bread, you can use warm OR cold beer! When pouring the beer into the bowl with the mix, we recommend pouring slowly, so it doesn't over-bubble. The same goes for any carbonated beverage you use to make our Beer Bread Mix; cold or hot will work!

Does beer have enough yeast to make bread? ›

Beer has yeast, but it doesn't always have enough to make the bread rise on its own. Craft brews sometimes leave the live yeast in (it forms a sort of sediment in the bottle), but mass-produced beers usually filter it out. If you relied on just the beer for rising, it might come out too dense.

What kind of beer is best for baking? ›

Amber and brown ales tend to be less bitter than the alternatives and feature a nutty flavor. Because of this, these beers are often recommended for caramels, cookies, and pies. Light-colored beers have their place in baking, too. Lagers and Witbiers are used in lighter cakes and cookies.

Can I use water instead of beer in beer bread? ›

Can You Use Something Other Than Beer in Beer Bread? Absolutely! Almost any carbonated or noncarbonated beverage can be used, including water, soda pop, milk or buttermilk, fruit juice and even creamed corn! In general substitute 12 fluid ounces of whatever liquid you choose in place of beer.

Should I use dark or light beer for beer bread? ›

Pro tip: As a good rule of thumb, keep in mind that whatever type of beer you use, the flavor will come through in your fresh-baked bread. Darker beer, like stouts and porters, will produce bread with more robust, pronounced flavors. Likewise, a blonde ale or pilsner will make a milder, lighter loaf.

How do you know when beer bread is done? ›

Bake the bread for 45 to 50 minutes, until a toothpick inserted about 1/2" into the top of the loaf comes out clean, or with a few moist crumbs clinging to it.

Why is my beer bread so dense? ›

Luckily, if you encounter this problem every time you break out the beer and the batter, there is an easy fix for your next loaf: Watch how much you're working it. Overworking the dough of your beer bread will affect the texture, causing it to turn from soft and chewy to tough and condensed.

Does the alcohol burn off in beer bread? ›

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), baked or simmered dishes that contain alcohol will retain 40% of the original amount after 15 minutes of cooking, 35% after 30 minutes and 25% after an hour. But there's no point at which all of the alcohol disappears.

What type of beer has the most yeast? ›

Hefeweizen is a classic example of beer that is not especially high in alcohol, typically coming in between 4% and 6%, but it has perhaps the highest levels of yeast suspended in the beer. Hefes are known for their cloudy, hazy appearance and their nice thick head.

Why is my beer bread tough? ›

If you bake an overworked dough, it will come out hard. Even though you aren't kneading beer bread, the same principle applies. It can be harder to tell when the dough is overworked, though, since you won't feel it in your hands and the mixture isn't supposed to be smooth. Instead, rely on your eyes.

Why do you put beer in beer bread? ›

The beer acts in place of yeast as the leavening agent, along with the baking powder. Keep in mind, the alcohol evaporates in the baking process, so it is safe for the kids to enjoy as well. Add in cheese if you like, it's not necessary, but it is delicious. Drizzling butter on top helps it have a nice crust.

Which beer makes the best beer cheese? ›

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is a well-known choice for beer cheese. Its crisp, hoppy bitterness and malty sweetness makes it an ideal partner to the creamy texture and salty flavor of beer cheese dip or soup.
