Have you ever been deceived or simply misled by a particular anime? Perhaps due to a bad synopsis, too unpredictable and unexpected author's real intentions, or maybe a dishonest advertising company? Or even objective deception on the part of the author? I've made a thread in the past about how the heavily biased reputation or the opinions of certain people can skew your expectations and perception of the show, but what about cases where the anime and the people involved do it themselves?

Yes, all the time. In my great endavour to find and watch pure nudity ecchi and document all bikini armor anime, i got deceived many times but that's expected to make progress.

I used to think Eminence in Shadow was edgy because of the cover and the characters.

@Autumni So, when the show first came out, no one could have ever expected it to be an over-the-top satire of this type of story?
@RobertBobert yeah. My edgy friend watched it but his day quickly got ruined after watching it.

The synopsis and the trailers seemed to emphasize how old the protagonist was (I think he was 30-something, which is basically a walking corpse in a shounen I guess), so I was interested in what a kaiju-fighting action shounen would feel like with someone a little more well-adjusted and even world-weary than a teenager.
It turns out he's basically just a teenager. I can see that most people found him endearing or just didn't care, but I felt misled and pretty disappointed.

The most recent example I can think of is Kaijuu No.8.

@perseii Would you like him to be more ojisan-ish than just a shonen MC in a grown man's body?

I just felt a little duped by the marketing. Or maybe I just put ideas into my own head and have no one else to blame but myself.

@RobertBobert It would definitely make things more interesting. But I'm not sure if that would improve the show as a whole that much.

@perseii Well, I can't say anything about this particular show, but adult characters in anime often end up being just adult versions of standard teen archetypes.

@WaterMage This show was actually one of my main motivators for creating this topic, as many expected it to be a typical edgy show about characters conquering darkness, and not a literal ancient Greek tragedy without a hint of irony.

in anime and manga, I keep getting incestbaited but the authors almost never commit to it in the end...
There is at least one incestbait show every season but all of them pull the NBR card, its ridiculous

@WaterMage Well, as you can see, people were very angry about this, including disproving theories that it could have been predicted or even speculating that the author was deliberately giving people false hope to provoke controversy and reactions. For example, one theory says that the hype over Ai's death had gone to his head so much that he was desperately hoping that something similar in the finale could provide an even greater wow factor. One way or another, it looks like the resulting feedback shocked him so much that he now barely appears on Twitter.

@RobertBobert idk man it's true he has lost lot respect point with me not just how it ended but mainly how fast it ended. Leaving almost everything unresolved except one big goal. And more if this theory I hear I feel more disappointed.
I have stopped thinking about it it's still is my favourite anime so I don't want to berate it too much. I have made my peace just like my goat Aqua✌️

@WaterMage Not only you, my friend, not only you. Many people are angry not so much because of the badly created ending, but because of how much it disappointed them without any particular warning.

@RobertBobert what saddens me I see people also taking pot shots at Kaguya ending. Which is for the record hundred times better. I have my slight hopes because of Kaguya ending. It was perfect. Bit unrealistic sure but every plot was resolved and a great ending. I expected somthing like this for OnK too. Which ig was even bigger comercial success. Huh..

Have sales dropped? Could you be more detailed? After all, I heard that by the end of the series, it was in the top 20 most successful manga.

-Tags on MAL not matching up or not being added
-Rating system is just wtf (I mean R,R+ and such, unlike it's western counterpart)
-Trailers don't give you any idea what to expect outside of maybe what the characters look like
-Seinen & Shounen a lot of times don't mean much to the point where I've stopped even checking
As for animes themselves,I've gotten dissapointed at endings and such (looking at you Requiem for a Phantom) but the only deliberate instance I can think of is Babylon, that shit took a nosedive so quick it went from a potential masterpiece to cringing so hard I needed 3 days of recuperation and 4 packs of smokes just to make it trough the last 5 eps.

I assumed there'd be some supernatural elements explaining why they all disappeared and was hoping for a mystery; turns out the actual plot was about three girls and three boys running away together in a coming-of-age story.
I still don't know whether the movie was any good since it wasn't even the one I intended to watch!

I tend to watch anime movies on airplanes since they might have ones I can't access otherwise. Last time I flew, there was one called Seven Days War where the provided synopsis said something to the effect of all the boys in this girl's class going missing.

@ALEXxAMI If we are talking about the same film, then this was most likely an example of a crazy remake of an old classic, unusual for Japanese media. Ichiro Okouchi's participation just doesn't help matters.

I thought Komi-san Can''t Communicate was just a slice of life comedy with quirky characters about making friends, I mean almost like a iyashikei; that's why I enjoyed it even if it's one of the most hated anime here on AD. However, something like that could only work in a seinen magazine: this is a shounen, so it turned out that the whole premise was just an excuse to have yet another romance between an average guy and the most beautiful girl in the school.

With a name like girls last tour you can't expect it to not be dark, but I didn't expect how dark it got very fast
Also the focus on conversation about religion in relation to evangelion I expected something very different

@RobertBobert well plenty of popular anime/manga are hated. This one seems to be hated a bit more than the average, at least here.

Well, there was Bokurano. Man, that was depressing for a Mecha show. It even outdoes EVA, but it is also good. Still the amount of death & carnage was unexpected to say the least!

I would have added Samurai Flamenco if I hadn't known where it was heading before hand. Instead of being confused and turned off by the shift, I was binging the first few episodes to get to the crazy. Then again, I think I would have been pleasantly surprised
Title wise, "Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?" sounds like what it says. A harem series about picking up girls in a dungeon. Which both is and isn't misleading depending on how you look at it. The harem aspect isn't focused on enough to warrent the "harem" tag on here, but there are multiple girls who want the main guy.

@WaterMage Kaguya's ending was just meh, but from what I see now a lot of people have become more skeptical about it, since many of the manga's problems were previously ignored due to the author's reputation and general love for his work. But now the attitude has changed a lot.
Have sales dropped? Could you be more detailed? After all, I heard that by the end of the series, it was in the top 20 most successful manga.
I don't really have details but I always see OnK in top,10 selling in random posts but yesterday I saw one where it wasn't.

I went into Ooi Tonbo! expecting to get a light-hearted anime about Golf, instead I got clinical depression. Seriously, why is this anime about playing Golf so sad?!
