Are you nails breaking and splitting? Try a DIY nail soak recipe to strengthen nails and prevent breaks. Use Knox gelatin for nails both internally and externally in a gelatin nail soak for stronger nails.

You've no doubt heard about the benefits of collagen for your hair and skin. Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body, and it's responsible for the structure of several different body structures, including your skin and nails.

Gelatin is a cooked form of collagen. They aren't the same thing, but they do share several of the same properties.

Knox gelatin for nails can be used either internally by eating it or by making a nail soak DIY. Gelatin is easy to find and inexpensive, so I use it for a gelatin nail soak.

What is Knox Gelatin?

As I briefly mentioned above, collagen is a protein that your body naturally produces. Your body uses collagen all over the body.

Collagen is used for your skin, bones, teeth, and joints. However, as we age, collagen production naturally slows down.

This can lead to signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles. It can also affect your nails and make them more brittle.

Knox gelatin a cooked form of collagen. They aren't the same thing, but they do have similar properties.

Use Knox gelatin for nails because it is almost 100 percent protein to strengthen nails. Gelatin and collagen have almost the same proteins, and both are high in glycine.

One key difference is that collage dissolves in cold or hot water, but gelatin will only dissolve in hot water. Therefore, you will need to heat this nail soak DIY and let it cool before using.

Is Knox Gelatin Good For Your Nails?

There are conflicting reports. Some say that eating gelatin or using a gelatin nail soak makes their nails stronger. Others say that it doesn't work.

Knox gelatin does have protein, so a nail soak DIY with protein can help.

Using Knox gelatin for nails won't hurt your nails. It's easy to make and inexpensive, so there's no harm in trying it.

What is Good to Soak Your Nails In?

Carrier Oils

You can soak your nails in a vegetable oil to soften your skin and cuticles. Nut oils like macadamia nut oil or almond oil are particularly good for a nail soak DIY.

Simply place the oils in a jar and set the jar in warm water to warm the oils. Never heat the oil over direct heat or in the microwave. This can create hot spots.

Hand Lotion

You can also warm your favorite lotion for a DIY nail soak recipe. (This is my favorite hand lotion because it works and isn't greasy.) You can heat is as I mentioned above or add warm water to a tablespoon of lotion to warm it up.

Discard any leftovers because the extra water can break the preservatives.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is said to whiten and brighten nails. Add a teaspoon of lemon juice to warm water and soak.

White Vinegar

Vinegar can be used as a DIY nail soak recipe to soften the skin and disinfect. Use 2 parts of vinegar to 1 part water to make a nail soak DIY.

How to Strengthen Brittle Nails

Along with Knox gelatin for nails, you can also try these things to strengthen brittle nails.

  • Take a biotin supplement. Biotin can help strengthen hair and nails.
  • Avoid soaking in water and use gloves in your hand wash dishes or will have your hands in water a lot.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals in nail polish or nail polish remover. Use nontoxic nail polishes and acetone-free polish remover.
  • Don't use gel nails or get acrylic nails until your nails are stronger.
  • Keep your nails trimmed so they don't chip or crack.
  • Don't use your nails as tools.
  • Use a hand lotion every day.
  • Use gloves when cleaning. Harsh chemicals can dry your skin.
